An animated GIF is a series of separate pictures shown one after the other at speed, to give the impression of movement. There is no limit to the number of pictures,or frames as they are known, that can be used. The price you pay for this is SPEED. The more frames in an animation, the smoother the motion but the longer it takes to load on the page.
I’ll create animations to include in your site if you want them, but advise you to use them sparingly. You may have noticed that this page took longer to load than the others, due to the amount of animation it contains. |
The two animations of the drinker may look the same. If you watch carefully, you will notice that the one on the right takes slightly longer to go through the sequence. This is because the one on the left has had some frames deleted to reduce the file size. This will improve loading time only slightly, but if there are a number of them on the page these reductions quickly add up to reduce the overall loading time. The best thing to do is use them very occasionally, or not at all. The other option is to have the least possible number of frames, but this will cause jerky movements in some animations.

When the page is fully loaded (which may take some time due to the images) pass your cursor over the advertising banner on the right. This is called a rollover and is normally used for menu buttons, but it can be incorporated into any picture as long as the two separate images are the same size. When the mouse is out, it shows one image, and when hovered shows another. |
Rotating banners are normally Java applets which when loaded, constantly change by either fading, venetian blinding, and many other effects. You find them at the top or bottom of a lot of websites. They can be of any size but do take a little time to load, which is why I try to avoid them. You can see an example on the home page I made for suitebuys.co.uk It’s the one in the centre of the page showing different pictures at short intervals. They can be quite eye catching, but once again, you pay for it with loading time.
