Just enter ‘Web hosting’ into your search engine. It’ll take you hours to look at them all! You can also browse through a couple of computer magazines small ads. As for recommendations from me, I wont recommend anything or anyone I haven’t tried for myself. As I have been happy with the service I have received from them, they only add up to three! Check them out for yourself if you like, but please remember: I have absolutely no connection with any of them (apart from putting the odd link on my sites). They are totally different companies, I simply rent my webspace from them. Right, now I’ve made that quite clear I’ll give you the URL’s to check them over, and tell you a little about what you can expect, on the right. www.oneandone.co.uk , www.fasthosts.co.uk , and the amazingly cheap www.webmania.co.uk
Two important points.
When you find a hosting package that suits you, and decide that you would like me to build your site for you; please ensure that the package allows FULL FTP. This is the means by which I transfer the site from my PC to your webspace (File Transfer Protocol). Also, you should have the choice of Linux or Windows server. PLEASE choose the Linux. This will make no difference to your site whatsoever, but saves me problems. The Windows servers came about fairly recently to enable Front Page Extensions to be used, and as I dont use this software, you dont need to enable the extensions.
Almost finished.
When you have everything sorted out, it’s time to work out a rough plan of your site, with a rough page count, and start getting the content to me. I will be working on the preliminary layout from the information given on the Order Form, and will be able to add the content as I receive it. You will have access to the site via my webspace to enable you to tell me of any changes you would like made, and watch the progress.

I can’t answer that for you. You choose the package that suits both your needs and your pocket. I can only offer advice, and whether you take notice is up to you. I am sure there are many other hosts out there with good reputations, but as I have never used them it wouldn’t be right for me to pass judgement. I have used One and One for a couple of years now, and as far as domain registration goes, they are one of the cheapest for a co.uk site. They have several packages (which you can upgrade at any time), and the more you pay, the more extras you get. Their business package is very good and at the time of writing, is £8.99 a month with 20 gigabytes of monthly bandwidth. Fasthosts is another good company with roughly the same price for their Home Pro package. They also offer unlimited monthly bandwidth. Last but not least is a company I discovered not long ago, and immediately signed up with. It must be one of the cheapest around. Webmania offers six gigabytes of monthly bandwidth for £20.00 per year. I thought there must be a catch, but after using them for a while, I found them to be genuine. The cost of registering a domain is quite high, and there aren’t any whistles or bells but at that price you can’t complain I would recommend this one to begin with.
What now?
Once you have decided on a host the first thing to do is register your domain name with them. It’s pointless me designing your title banners only to find that your domain name is unavailable. Believe it or not, I found out the hard way.
I already own a domain called barryoneoff.co.uk so I thought I would call this web design site simply ‘Oneoffs’. After creating my banner and starting on the site I decided to register. Already taken! Tried ‘Oneoffsdesign’. Already taken! So I ended up with a longer name than expected. Back to the point. When you decide on a name, think of some alternative variations in case you can’t get what you want. Once you have all this sorted, go to the Order Form and give me any information asked for. |
